LED vs Projection for Outdoor Screens

The full technical comparison — nits against lumens, pixel pitch and viewing distance, weather and install, lifespan and maintenance hours, and total cost of ownership over ten to fifteen years.

Both technologies put a big picture in front of a crowd. They fail in completely different conditions, and cost money in completely different ways. This is the comparison on the numbers.

Daylight and ambient light

This is where the two genuinely diverge, and for most buyers it settles the question on its own.

An LED wall emits its own light — 5,000–8,000 nits on outdoor panels, against roughly 300–500 nits for a home television. A projector doesn’t emit anything at the screen; it adds light to a surface that is already being lit by the sky. Full daylight is 10,000–25,000 lux of ambient light, and no consumer or event projector wins that fight at any lumen rating.

The rule

Any daylight in the run sheet → LED. Always after dark → projection is plenty, and gives you far more screen per dollar.

The summer timing trap

This catches Australian community events every year. In midsummer the sun sets around 8:30–9 pm in the southern states, and full darkness follows twenty to thirty minutes later. A “movie night” advertised for a 7 pm start is a daylight event for its first ninety minutes.

Options, in order of how often they work:

  • Start later — the simplest fix, but it collides with families and school nights.
  • Run pre-show content on LED, or accept that the pre-show is audio and activity rather than screen.
  • Choose LED if the schedule is fixed and the audience expects a picture at 7 pm.
  • Shade the screen — a projection tent or a heavily shaded position buys you some twilight, but it does not beat direct daylight.

Audience size and viewing distance

Projection comfortably covers backyard through to community scale, on screens up to about 6–12 m. Past that, keeping a projected image bright enough over a very large surface gets expensive quickly.

LED holds contrast at distance in a way projection cannot, so the back of a large crowd still gets a punchy, saturated picture rather than a grey one. For major public events with thousands of people, that difference is visible from the middle of the field.

Picture: resolution and pixel pitch

A projector has a fixed resolution — typically 1080p or 4K — spread across whatever size you project. The bigger the screen, the larger each pixel becomes. Image quality also depends on the surface being flat and square to the lens, which is why keystone correction (and inflatable screens moving in wind) costs you sharpness.

An LED wall is built from panels at a fixed pixel pitch — the distance in millimetres between adjacent LEDs. P3.9 means 3.9 mm apart. Smaller pitch means a sharper image close up, more panels and more money.

Match pitch to the closest viewers, not the spec sheet. A person with normal vision resolves detail down to about one arc-minute, so past a certain distance the eye cannot separate adjacent pixels and a coarser, cheaper pitch looks identical.

Two working rules:

  • Minimum comfortable distance in metres ≈ the pitch number. A P4 wall is crisp from about 4 m; closer and you start to see the grid.
  • Optimal distance ≈ pitch × 2–3, where the image reads as fully solid to everyone.

Pitch also fixes resolution against physical size: a P3.9 panel packs roughly 256 pixels per metre, so a native Full HD (1920×1080) image needs a wall about 7.5 m × 4.2 m. Native 4K needs either a finer pitch or a much larger wall. On LED, “how sharp” and “how big” are the same decision.

Specs that matter alongside pitch

  • Brightness (nits) — 5,000–8,000 for outdoor daylight visibility. Outdoors this matters more than pitch.
  • Refresh rate — 3,840 Hz or higher, so there are no scan lines or flicker on camera. Any event being filmed or streamed needs this.
  • IP rating — IP65 on the front face for outdoor weather sealing.
  • Serviceability — front-serviceable modules let one panel be swapped without dismounting the wall, which matters enormously on a permanent install.

Brightness for projection

If you’re going the projection route, brightness has to rise faster than screen size. Light spreads over area, so doubling both dimensions of a screen quarters the brightness landing on it.

  • Small framed screens (100–120”) are comfortable on a few thousand lumens after dark.
  • A 4 m inflatable wants meaningfully more.
  • A 6 m or larger inflatable wants 10,000 lumens or more, particularly for a twilight start.

Laser light sources are worth the premium in dusty environments — the sealed optical path is more durable than a lamp projector’s, and there is no lamp to replace.

Weather, power and run time

Both run safely outdoors with the right kit, but they need different care.

Outdoor LED is sealed and IP-rated, built to run continuously for days, and largely indifferent to stray light and weather. It draws more power and weighs considerably more, so distribution and rigging are part of the plan, not an afterthought.

Projection needs the projector kept dry and out of the wind, and it needs darkness. The screen itself — an inflatable frame and surface — tolerates rain fine; it’s the electronics that don’t. A projection or weather tent solves this properly for regular operators.

Install and permanence

Projection is portable by design. An inflatable system goes from trailer to picture in well under an hour with one or two people, and packs down the same way. That is the whole proposition for touring, hire businesses and occasional community events.

LED can be deployed temporarily, but it takes significantly more time and manpower — the panels are heavy and a support structure has to be erected. Where LED comes into its own is as a permanent or semi-permanent installation: always ready, no bump-in, no crew, usable for daytime sport, wayfinding and events alike. This is the axis buyers most often overlook. A lamp projector working hard through a summer season will need attention; an LED wall generally will not.

Cost and total cost of ownership

Upfront, projection wins comfortably. A complete inflatable system — screen, projector, audio, blower, anchors — starts around $8k and gives you the most picture per dollar of anything available after dark.

LED is a capital investment that scales with physical size and pixel pitch.

The comparison changes over a 10–15 year horizon, which is the right frame for a council, resort or venue rather than a one-off event:

  • LED has no lamps, no bump-in labour and no per-event setup crew.
  • Projection repeats its setup cost at every single event, in staff hours.
  • LED earns revenue outside cinema use — daytime sport, community messaging, sponsor content, events — where a projection rig sits in a shed.
  • Projection stays far cheaper if the screen is used a handful of times a year.

Choose projection if: your events run after dark, you need a very large image on a modest budget, you need to move it between sites, or you’re screening a handful of times a year. Start with inflatable cinema systems.

Is LED better than projection for outdoor cinema?

For anything running in daylight, yes — LED emits its own light at 5,000–8,000 nits and stays vivid in sun, where a projector is fighting 10,000–25,000 lux of ambient light. After dark, projection gives far more screen per dollar and is the better buy for occasional events. The deciding factor is light, then audience size, then budget.

How many lumens do I need for an outdoor movie screen?

After dark, a 3–4 m screen is comfortable on a few thousand lumens, while a 6 m or larger inflatable wants 10,000 lumens or more — especially for a twilight start. Brightness needs to rise faster than screen size, because light spreads over area: doubling both dimensions quarters the brightness on the surface.

What pixel pitch do I need for an outdoor LED screen?

Match the pitch to the closest viewers, not the spec sheet. As a rule of thumb the minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres is roughly the pitch number, so a P4 wall looks crisp from about 4 m. Can I use a projector during the day?

Not effectively. Full daylight is 10,000–25,000 lux of ambient light and it washes out any projected image regardless of lumens. If any part of your run sheet happens before dark — a sports final, a daytime festival, a school assembly — you need LED.
