Check DisplayPort Alt Mode first

This is the one thing worth confirming before you buy. A USB-C port only outputs video if it supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode, and not every USB-C port does — plenty are data-and-charging only, and the port looks identical either way. Most recent MacBooks, iPads with USB-C, Surface devices and flagship Android phones support it; budget laptops and older phones frequently do not. If the port has no Alt Mode, no passive cable will produce a picture, and you will need a powered dock instead.

Where it earns its place

It removes the adapter-and-dongle stack that tends to fall apart mid-event. For presentations, outdoor screenings run from a laptop, or a phone playing back a showreel, a single cable from device to projector is one less connection to fail in the dark.

If your source has a full-size HDMI output rather than USB-C, use the standard HDMI-to-HDMI cable instead — same length, same 4K capability, no Alt Mode requirement to worry about.
